Monetisation vs data privacy

Data monetisation has been a recurring theme at various seminars and events that I have attended or spoken at over the last few years.

The below infographic – by content marketing specialists Hupspot – illustrates some of the information that data brokers are collecting and selling about each of us.

Personally, I welcome some of the consumer protection legislation, such as PoPI, that is designed to protect me from the unscrupulous sale of my data.

Ask yourself the question – “Would I be comfortable if this information about me was given to my bank, to my boss, or to a pushy telesales rep?”

Companies looking to monetise data need to balance the need to protect their reputation by protecting their customer’s personal data.
