Any data governance geek should be excited by’s 2013 Word of The Year.

It’s not a new word. In fact it’s quite well known.

The word – privacy – was chosen precisely because of its news worthiness over the course of 2013.

From Edward Snowden’s expose of the NSA’s spying (ironically itself a breach of privacy) to new technologies such as the Google Glass the principles of privacy have driven a lot of news.

In South African, the Protection of Personal Information Bill (PoPI) has been signed in to law, promising severe penalties for companies that abuse personal information.

Privacy should be a major driver for data governance this year.

Hopefully your company won’t be making the news for its failure to comply with data privacy legislation this year.
